Historical Overview

Darkhan metallurgical plant  is Mongolia’s leading and largest steel manufacturer, specializing in pressure metal processing and the production of casted products. The company was established in 1990 by the Council of Ministers of the People’s Republic of Mongolia (Decree No. 160) under the framework of a bilateral cooperation agreement between the governments of Mongolia and Japan. The plant was strategically located in the Darkhan-Selenge region, leveraging the area’s iron ore resources.</p>
<p>In 2009-2010, the company took a significant step forward by bringing the Tumurtolgoi Iron Ore Deposit into production. This included the establishment of an open-pit mine and the commencement of dry beneficiation of iron ore, marking a new chapter in Mongolia’s metallurgical industry. By 2010, Darkhan metallurgical plant  shifted towards producing value-added steel products from domestic iron ore to satisfy the local market. This was part of a broader strategic vision to develop into a Mining and Metallurgical Complex. In 2011, the company further expanded by constructing an open-pit mine in the western section of the Tumurtein Iron Ore Deposit, recognized as one of Mongolia’s key strategic mineral resources.

2022

The concession agreement for the “Mining and Metallurgical Complex” project was terminated after a thorough review. Subsequently, the operations of Darkhan metallurgy were transferred to state ownership, continuing as a limited liability company (LLC).

2018

A blast furnace was installed in the steel production section, enhancing manufacturing capabilities.

2017

The rolled steel ball manufacturing facility was commissioned, marking a significant expansion of product offerings.

2016

A dry magnetic beneficiation plant was established at the Tumurtolgoi mine to further improve ore processing.

2015

A 36.1 km railway was constructed from Tömörtéyn mine to Khandgait station, complete with loading/unloading terminals and stations to streamline logistics.

2014

The development of an open-pit mine in the eastern part of the Tumurtein deposit was completed, along with the construction of a dry magnetic beneficiation plant

2014

Dry magnetic beneficiation plant commissioned at the Tumurtein Mine.

2011

An open-pit mine was constructed in the western part of the Tumurtein iron ore deposit, enhancing production capacity.

2010

In 2010, a dry magnetic beneficiation plant established at the Tumurtolgoi mine.

2008

Licenses for the Tumurtein, Tumurtolgoi, and Khust-Uul iron ore deposits were successfully reacquired, securing key resources for future production.

1994

The factory began full-scale operations, marking the realization of long-term development goals.

1993

The first steel melting operation took place in October, initiating the company’s journey in steel production.

1990

The foundation of the metallurgical plant was officially laid, laying the groundwork for future success.
